This page explains what this website collects, why, and what you can do about it. It's written in plain language rather than legal boilerplate.
The short version
- If you fill in a form, I receive what you typed so I can reply to you.
- The site can measure how it's used — pages viewed, where visitors arrive from, what gets clicked — but only if you accept that when asked. Decline and nothing is loaded.
- I don't sell your information, and I don't use it for advertising.
What you send me directly
The Career Disruptor Memo signup collects your email address and your confirmation that you want to join the list. I use it only to send the memo. You can ask to be removed at any time.
The career counseling interest list collects your name if you provide it, your email address, and your confirmation that you want availability and launch updates. Joining the list does not guarantee an appointment.
The contact form collects your first name, last name, email address, organization if you provide it, the kind of help you are interested in, and whatever you write in the message. I use it to reply to you and to follow up about working together.
Submissions are delivered to me by email through Google, and may also be saved to a private spreadsheet in my Google account so nothing gets lost. Google processes this on my behalf as my email and document provider. Before anything is sent, the form runs Cloudflare Turnstile, a check that the sender is a person rather than a script. Cloudflare sees that a form was used, not the words you typed, and it is not used for advertising.
How the site measures usage
This site uses two analytics services, Amplitude and Statsig. Neither one loads unless you accept it first. If you do, between them they record:
- which pages you view, and in what order
- the site or search engine you arrived from
- your approximate location, worked out from your IP address — city level, not an address
- your device type, browser, screen size, and language
- clicks, scrolling, page performance, and when a form is started or submitted — that a form was used, not what you typed in it
- a randomly generated identifier stored in your browser, so return visits can be recognised as the same visitor
That identifier isn't your name, and none of this tells me who you are unless you also send me a form.
Session recording
Amplitude's Session Replay is part of what you're accepting or declining above. If it's on, it records enough to replay your visit afterwards as a reconstruction of the page: which pages you saw, where you moved your cursor, what you clicked, how far you scrolled.
Two things it is not: it isn't a video of your screen, and it has no access to your camera, microphone, other tabs, or anything outside this website.
All forms on this site are excluded from these recordings. They appear as blank areas, so what you type into them — your name, your email, your message — is not captured in a replay.
Cookies and browser storage
If you accept measurement, the analytics services above store a small amount of data in your browser, using cookies and local storage, to recognise repeat visits. There are no advertising cookies on this site.
One thing is stored either way: your answer to the question about measurement, kept in this site's local storage so you're not asked on every page. Declining stores the word "denied" and a date, nothing more. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes it, and you'll be asked again next time.
Two other companies see your IP address simply because of how the site is built, which is normal for any website:
- GitHub hosts the site, so its servers log requests.
- Google Fonts serves the typefaces, so Google receives a request from your browser when a page loads.
Your choices
Nothing loads until you say so. On your first visit the site asks before loading either analytics service. Decline and no analytics script is fetched at all, on that visit or any later one. Your answer is remembered in your own browser's storage — it isn't sent anywhere, and it's per browser and per device, so you'll be asked again somewhere new.
Turn it all off at the browser level. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, no analytics and no session recording load at all, and you're never asked — nothing is collected and no scripts run. Most browsers offer this in their privacy settings, and some privacy extensions send it for you. That signal overrides the buttons above.
Block storage. Blocking cookies and site data for this site in your browser settings also prevents the identifier being stored.
Ask me. You can ask what I hold about you, ask me to correct it, or ask me to delete it. Use the contact form at the bottom of the home page and say what you need.
Keeping it
Form submissions stay in my email and mailing list for as long as I might reasonably need to follow up, or until you ask me to remove them. Analytics and session recordings are kept by Amplitude and Statsig under their own retention schedules and are deleted automatically over time.
Children
This site is aimed at adults making career decisions. It isn't directed at children under 13, and I don't knowingly collect their information.
Changes to this page
If this changes, I'll update the date at the top. The current version is always the one you're reading.
